HANNELL, Elizabeth - Addendum 1

Continued from: Elizabeth HANNELL

Elizabeth Hannell was initially transported from England, to Parramatta, Sydney, Australia.

It was during these years of her servitude, that she mothered James (1813), John (1815) and Jesse (1818), with fellow convict, James Walton.

However, after serving enough time to clear her original sentence of 7 years, she reverted to her nefarious ways, and for her part in the crime, was 'luckily' sentenced to 'Life' in Newcastle, in 1820. James Garland, the ring-leader, was hanged! Here are the hand-copied transcripts...

It was during this period (1820), in Newcastle, that Elizabeth met another convict, John White. The two convicts had a daughter,Mary Ann (White) Hannell, b. 10th May, 1821, in Newcastle. Mary Ann was the first registration of Baptism at Christ Church.

John White was never married to Elizabeth, and apparently, was also never in Elizabeth's 'good' books, as the relationship was short-lived. Elizabeth met, and married a 'Ticket-of-Leave' man, John Butler Hewson. The approval for the ceremony was obtained from the Governor's pleasure, as he had doubts as to Elizabeth's bad character. However, he did grant permission - "For marriage only", and the couple wed at Christ Church, on 28th August, 1826.

John White died suddenly, on 13th Nov. 1828, in Newcastle.
