My Distaff Ancestry - WATSON & OSBORNE

By the time I took an interest in Family Tree History, most of my mother's side of the ledger, the distaff side, had passed away - and along with them, the facts, anecdotes, descriptions - and photos, because their children either didn't know who the people were, didn't want to keep them, or didn't care enough. Most unfortunate, is the spread of the family. I know a little about some of Mum's distant relations, some of my distant cousins but overall, very little about them. Even more unfortunate, is the reticence of most of them to open up with me to provide any assistance in compiling a decent Family Register. Strange, I know, but ...

My mother, Lydia Josie WATSON, (1923-94), was one of six children, and the eldest daughter of Albert Edward WATSON, (1892-1970) and Lydia Ada OSBORNE, (1894-1987).

Albert Watson's family can be traced to his 5 times (7 generations) Great Grandfather, Thomas Watson, whose actual birthplace is Faversham, Swale, Kent, England. U.K., and birthdate was 9-12-1673. Thomas married Margaret STURGIN, (1670- ?).

As far as I have been able to discover, Thomas and Margaret Watson had one male child, named Thomas Watson, (b.16/12/1705-d.31/1/1774) in Rolvenden, Kent, England. U.K., who married Mary PIALL, (1707-1779), the daughter of Henry P. and Elizabeth, née SOUTHERDEN, (daughter of John and Mary - née RUSSELL. It's interesting that the surname of RUSSELL appears in both families. More checking to be done, there. br/>

Thomas and Mary had 7 children, the 4th being Stephen, (b.3/2/1739-d.23/1/1802), who married Ann KADWELL, (b. c.1740 -d.?). They, in turn, had 16 children ! The 10th child, was William Henry, (b.20/7/1776-d.6/5/1855) who married Sarah Jane WEBB, (b.13/8/1775-d.6/7/1855).

The start - in Australia ...

William Henry and Sarah Jane had a modest 6 children, the first son being John Watson, (b.1812-d.18/12/1871) who married Harriet WEEKES, (1819-1891). Both were born in England and died in the Hunter Valley, NSW. Australia, however, they had 11 children, in the Wilberforce NSW area. The 2nd eldest child, was John William WATSON (b.20/4/1839-d.8/6/1891), and he married Charlotte Harriet PAINE, (b.17/4/1841-d.14/5/1905). Charlotte was Australian born, having entered the world, in Bolwarra, near Maitland, and died in Maitland.

John and Charlotte had an even dozen children - the 4th of which, was this writer's Great Grandfather, Alfred James 'Jim' WATSON, (b.23/9/1866-d.9/9/1936). Alfred married Lydia Elizabeth GARDINER, (b.1865-d.1/6/1943).

Alfred James Watson and Lydia Elizabeth, had eight children: Wesley Stephen (1888-1966), Ernest James (1890-1970), Albert Edward, (1892-1970), Florence "Molly" (1895-1974), Lillian A.M. "Lilly" (1897-1966), Ruth Elizabeth, (1899 - ? ), Victor G. (1901-01), Charles. (1902-02).

Albert Edward WATSON, b. Aug. 24th, 1892, married Lydia Ada OSBORNE, b. Sept.19th, 1894, on the 5th of Dec.1914, at West Maitland, NSW, Australia.

Six children arrived over the next 15 years: Albert Kenneth, (1915-76), Charles Leslie James, (1917-94), Robert Noel, (1919-), my Mum - Lydia Josie, (1923-94), Nellie Enid, (1926-86) and Stewart William, (1929-2015). One of the odd things that families do, resulted in most of this family being referred to by their middle names: Ada, Ken, Les, Noel, Josie, Enid, Bill.

My grandmother, Lydia Ada Osborne, was one of seven children born to Charles George Knight OSBORNE, (1854-1944), and Lydia Jane MANSFIELD, (1861-1905): Phyllis G.J. (1884-1963), Jane Frances 'Nin', (1885-1962), Thomas Charles Knight, (1887-1962), William Knight, (1890-1949), Robert Charles Knight, (1892-1964), Lydia Ada, (1894-1987), and Eliza Kate, (1898-1982).

Great grandmother, Lydia Jane OSBORNE, née MANSFIELD, was the daughter of John and Betsy, of which not much is known, other than BETSY was born in Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, U.K., and married into the MANNING family - before the OSBORNE.
